We’ve been working full tilt on the LabRat miata, so we’ve neglected the updates. Uh huh, likely story. Let’s catch up.
The following is light on wit and dense on information. Lots to share!
Cage Modifications
Since we have a wide variety of body sizes and shapes fitting into one miata cockpit, we had to make safety modifications to the existing cage. One of our drivers, John, has an exceptionally long torso and even with the seat lower in the car the top of his helmet extends above the main rollcage hoop. With advice from John Condren of ChumpCar and excellent work by Doug Chase of ChaseRace, we now have a roll cage safe for all of our drivers!
We also had nascar-style intrusion prevention bars fitted. Much better!
Fire System
So our drivers live to race another day we added a three zone fire system. Sean did an excellent job on the installation, starting with removing the old fire-bottle bracket.
Suspension Fixes
While going over the suspension bits we found some fairly well destroyed tie rod ends! Yikes- who knows what condition the ball joints are in! We panicked, thinking our already-tight budget was completely blown. Fortunately, John Condren of ChumpCar assured us tie rod ends were considered “safety” (all ball joints, to be precise) and can be repaired with OEM replacements. whew!
